Production Diary (Week 9)

This week I finished my dossier pages and edited my audio log that I recorded last week.

To finish my pages I finalised the layouts and started to add the information to them. I also added buttons that members of my team had made to the pages so that they had a consistent element, and also the arrows they made fit more with the style of the time period.

I also created the content page for our dossier that will be used as the home page and will allow users to get to all of our sections.

When editing my audio log I was trying to make it sound like it was being played through a phonograph as that was the technology used at the time for recording audio. To do this I added Brownian noise to my audio log to create static and I also adjusted the equalisation of the audio make it have a slightly higher pitch as that is what audio played through a phonograph sounded like.

I’m happy with my dossier pages as I think they include relevant information and present it in a way that is simple for the audience. I also think I have made it look like its from the 1800’s with the textures and fonts I have used, as well as the assets that my team mates and I have created, such as the back and forward buttons, the arrows, and the wax seal, as these things all look like items you would expect to see during the time period.

I think the audio log I recorded and edited sounds like its being played from a phonograph, which fits in with the audio of the time period, however I think I could improve its authenticity by having other sounds, such as a sound imitating the cranking of the handle for when audio is being recorded on a phonograph.

 

 

Production Diary (Week 8)

This week I did more work on my page layout and started getting together the information and assets that will go on the pages. I also recorded an audio log that will go on one of my pages and made a 3D model of a paintbrush for one of my pages.

I have had to change my original page layout because it was originally very compact, so I had to start it again to make it easier to look at for users. The layout that I am planning to use now is much simpler and will have one page for a biography for Daguerre, one page that will talk about Daguerre’s work with the spy faction, and one page will show famous pieces of work that Daguerre has produced, such as paintings and the Daguerreotype.

Once I finalised my page layouts I started to put together the information that will go on my pages. For the biography page this involved researching important facts about his life and death, and also adding in parts that we have decided are facts in this alternate timeline. I also got images of Daguerre and his famous pieces of work, such as the Daguerreotype and some of his most famous paintings.

Paintbrush

This is the paintbrush model that I made in 3DS Max. To make the handle I created a cylinder and added an inset to it to create the point towards the back. This was the hardest part of making this model as at first I wasn’t sure which tool would be the best one to use, so I tried extrude and bevel first but neither of those did what I wanted, and even when I did try the inset tool it took a while to get the effect just right. If I were to try making this model again I would make the inset further up the handle as I think that would make it look more like a paintbrush, however I am happy with how it has turned out and the inset is the only part of it I would try and improve if I were making it again.

The audio log that I recorded for one of my dossier pages was an official report into the death of Louis Daguerre, and what would happen to the spy organisation after his death. The character that I created to be speaking during the audio log was Spanish so to record it I had to put on a Spanish accent which was difficult, but I didn’t make to many mistakes while recording it because I had partly learnt the script so most of the time I knew what I was going t say and how it needed to be said, which made it a lot easier to record. After I had recorded it I started editing it in Audacity to make it sound like a recording from the time period. I did this by adding Brownian noise to create static. I also removed some of the frequency of the speech using Equalization, to make the audio seem like it was being played out of a phonograph.

Production Diary (Week 7)

To begin with we discussed in our team what we were individually going to work on during the session. I decided that I was going to work on creating some wax seals in Photoshop that we could use as our home buttons in our dossier. Once I finished this task I was going to start scripting for an audio log that I would include on my page. I also worked in 3DS Max to model a Daguerreotype and also started working on my page layout. Joel was going to work on researching and world building, and Kieran was working on page layout ideas, scripting for an audio log he was going to have, and writing about Charles Dickens and how he fits into our story.

This is the end product of a wax seal that I made. To create this I first made a circle using the ellipse tool and then went to Filter, Distort, then Wave to create the effect of wax that has been dripped onto the paper. Then I added an inner bevel to it to add depth and create highlights on parts to make them lighter or darker.

To create the indented part of the seal I created a smaller circle and added a slightly smaller wave to it so that its more circular than the outer section of the seal. Then I added an inner bevel to it so that it looked like it was lower than the the outer part.

For the symbol in the middle of the seal I created a H using the text tool and added an outer bevel to it to make it look slightly raised in the indented part of the seal.

Once I had completed the wax seal I started writing a script for an audio log that I am going to include on my dossier page. This audio log is going to be an official report into the death of Louis Daguerre and will explain how he died and how the organisation will move forward following his death. The character that I created for the audio log is a very serious person who isn’t going to let his personal feelings affect how he speak in the report so I am not including emotions in the script.

In 3DS Max I created a Daguerreotype camera to be used on my page and I started to texture it.

Finally I started to create my page layout in Indesign. To decide how I was going to lay it out I used designs that I had previously drawn. For my background I took an old paper texture off of Textures.com. I used the wax seal that I created in Photoshop as the home button on my page. I also started adding the images that I am going to include on my page. I took the images into Photoshop first and deleted the backgrounds of them so that they appear without a white background in Indesign. I also made one of the photos look like it was taken during that time period by changing it to greyscale and adding a yellow tint to it so that it looked old.

I am pleased with how the wax seal has turned out as I think it really looks like a wax seal that would have been used in the past and the bevels that I have added have given the seal depth and made it look like it has been stamped onto some wax. I think I can improve it as the edges of the two circles and the letter H are a bit rough so I could make them smoother if I was going to make it again. Also I think if I were doing it again I would choose a darker red as wax seals at the time were made with darker wax so a darker red would make it look more realistic from the time period.

I think that the Daguerreotype that I made is starting to look good and matches with the reference images I used quite well but I do need to finish texturing it to complete it. A problem I had while making it was I chamfered the lens part of the camera and that caused the sections of it to overlap which made it look jagged when rendered so I had to redo that part. Also when I was texturing I went into flatten mapping which meant I couldn’t texture the cylinder parts of the camera, such as the lens, which is why I could finish texturing it and I will need to use a different type of mapping to texture those parts.

I then started working on my page layout in Indesign. I created an A master page that included the page texture, the title, and home button as those things will be on every page that I make. I then started planning how I would lay out the images and audio logs I’m going to include as well as the text boxes.

 

 

 

 

Production Skills (Week 5)

This week we learned how to have a slide show of images in Indesign and learnt how to add interactivity to things like images. In Audacity we did post production on our audio logs that we recorded last week to make them sound like they are being played out of an old recording technology such as the phonautograph or the gramophone. We also made foley sounds which were dubbed over a short clip. Finally in 3DS Max we continued working on the generator we were making based off of reference images.

In Indesign we were shown how we can create slideshows of multiple images. To do this we had to create a frame for an image to go into, then we made multiple copies of that frame for multiple images. Then on the toolbar at the top of Indesign we went to Window, then Interactive, and then object state and made the frames part of the same object. Then we selected all the frames and imported the images we wanted. then we aligned the frames so they were stacked on top of each other. To test the slideshow we created buttons that were set to go to previous state and go to next state so that they would go through the images. This will be useful as when we are creating our pages we may want to have a lot of images and the best way to show them all will be to display them in a slideshow. Also in Indesign we created the pages for members of other groups that we had designed last week. I think the page I created followed the layout that I was given very well and I think the end result is what that person had im mind when they were designing the layout for it.

In Audacity we were mixing our audio that we had recorded to make it sound old. We dd this using the Equalisation and Leveler filters and by also adding Brownian noise. These all contributed to making the audio sound like it was being played on a device that they would have used at the time of Age of Napoleon and lowered the quality of the original sound. This task will be very useful to us as we will be including audio logs in our dossier so it is important we know how to make them seem like they are from the time period.

For the Foley task we each had to bring in an object that could be used to make a sound that would fit the footage that we were given of a robot walking. We had to make sure when we were doing this task that our sounds were in sync with the footage so that when it was dubbed over it it would sound like the sound was actually from the footage. I think we did a good job although there are some parts where we were not synced overall it sounded good and also at times some of the sounds we were making could not be heard due to the unpredictability of the objects we were using.

We also continued working on our generators from last week in 3DS Max and added some finishing touches to make them look more like the reference images. I think my finished generator does look like the ones in the reference images however I could improve it by texturing it with an old metal texture to complete it and make it look even more like the reference images.

 

Production Diary (Week 5)

This week for our production diary we started making our pitch abut our dossier that we planned in the last week and we also started making our design documents which needed to include all the work we had done so far for this project and include style guides showing the colours and fonts and the size of the fonts to give a clear indication of what it will look like on our pages. We also had to include Harvard referencing on everything we had used for this project.

I think the pitch that we created showed our ideas off well and showed the work we have done so far that has brought us to this point were we have clear ideas of what we each want our pages to look like and will give people a good idea of what we will have at the end of the project. However I think it could be improved by showing off more of our ideas to show that we have a range of options that we can use as inspiration for our final pages.

Production Diary (Week 4)

In week four of our production diary we had a team meeting to discuss what we were going to do for our powerpoint presentation of our pitch for our interactive dossier. We decided on what slides of the powerpoint we would individually work on and what content we would need to include in the pitch so we knew what work we had created needed to be given to which member of the team so they could put it into the powerpoint. During these discussions I  was given the task of creating the slide demonstrating our outline of the brief and another slide that involves the story of our faction the spies so that the client knows what we have planned so far and what we think about the brief. Joel and Kieran were given the task of compiling slides showing the research we have done, such as mood boards. Kieran also worked on slides showing our style guides so we could show what colours and fonts we plan to use. Sam got together some of our initial ideas to show what we plan for our pages to look like when we start creating them.

I think we planned this well and we were very clear on what each person was going to do so everyone knew what they needed to get from everyone else to make the slides which meant there would be no confusion when the time came to start creating our pitches.

Production Skills (Week 4)

In week 4 of our production skills we performed the scripts that we worked on in week 3. This involved voice acting and having to learn our scripts so that we could speak confidently and not make any mistakes. One of the problems I had when doing this task was my script needed to be spoken by a French person so I had to try and do a French accent. I think the accent I did was alright so it wasn’t too much of a problem. I also recorded another persons script so I had to make sure the levels on the recording device were set up correctly so that it would capture their performance in good quality.

In 3DS Max we started to create a generator from the time period of Age of Napoleon is set. We did this working from a reference image to give us an idea of what a generator from that time looked like. This task taught me how to bend shapes so that I can create different objects and how to work from a reference to try and recreate something.

We also designed possible page layouts for our dossiers in our design teams which we would then give to another group so that they could create the pages in Indesign. For this we drew sketches of our design ideas and had to write what text font we wanted and what colour and size we wanted it to be. I annotated my design so that whoever had to create it would know exactly what I wanted on the page and they could create it without having to ask too many questions. This has taught me how to effectively communicate my ideas through a brief and communicate my ideas through drawings.

In Indesign we did work on global navigation and learnt how to add videos. The global navigation work we did was adding a home button to our pages that worked the same way on all of the pages. We did this by creating an A master page and creating the home button on that page so that it would be applied to the other pages. To add a video we went into the Overlay section and selected the video overlay and then imported the video we wanted. This will be useful when we are making our final dossier pages as we will need a home button that users can use easily and we may want to include videos on some of our pages.

I think that the generator I started creating in 3DS Max was good as it did look like a generator from that time and the effects I added to it such as a chamfer and bevel worked well. I think it could be improved as the grooves going over the top of the curve do not look as good as they could.

When we were doing the task involving page layouts I though that I communicated what I wanted well through drawings and annotations and think that whoever was creating that page would know how I want it to look.
